Description:

Our client is a leading life sciences and technology company that supplies a broad range of analytical instruments, laboratory equipment, reagents, software and services used in scientific research, healthcare, biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing worldwide. Its mission is to enable customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer by supporting breakthroughs in areas from life-sciences research and clinical diagnostics to complex analytical challenges and drug development. 

They offer a wide range of scientific software products that help laboratories manage, analyze and automate data and workflows. Their portfolio includes enterprise lab informatics platforms with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN) and data management tools.

We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer / Infrastructure Operations Manager to ensure the AWS environment utilised by the development team is fit for purpose, secure and documented to the required standard. Reporting to the Head of IT, you will primarily be responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, security and new requirements of the AWS environment. This will be achieved by utilising existing tools within the current environment and making recommendations for new products to achieve the requirements of the role.

You will lead and develop all aspects to remove the current burden from the existing developers, allowing them to focus on revenue generating client projects. You will be expected to have the technical experience and knowledge to assist and support the developers in the day-to-day operational tasks of the team.

Key Responsibilities:

There are three main areas that we would like the DevOps role to focus on in the early stages of this relationship:

  • Disaster recovery plans – creating, documenting, testing and handover to the team.
  • Patch management – Update our systems to ensure they are patched as much as possible with the latest security updates.  Then implement a monthly process that can be handed over to the team.
  • Audit the current hardware/software in our environment and make recommendations for upgrades.  Produce and implement the plan where possible.

Once those have been completed, we will be asking the resource to run our ETL processes to release the development resources so they can focus on other tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

  • Defining and maintaining existing policies and procedures to ensure alignment with CRG and company best practices.
  • Ensuring new processes are implemented correctly through training and education.
  • Maintain and create infrastructure documentation. 
  • Ensuring system backups are monitored/maintained and tested on a regular basis.
  • Monitor and maintain threat detection applications. 
  • Develop and monitor a hardware security patching process that is completed on a monthly cycle.  
  • Manage the software and operating system life cycle for all products implemented within the business. Plan and implement updates as required.
  • Monitor the current hardware and software estate to ensure products going end of life are scheduled for upgrading in a timely manner. 
  • Provisioning of infrastructure components within the AWS cloud environment required by the Development team. 
  • Maintain the asset register for all implemented hardware.
  • Management of the change control system (CREQ)
  • Implementation of system monitoring to ensure the environments are healthy.
  • Early warning notifications should be activated enabling proactive resolution of potential incidents.
  • Regular system log monitoring to comply with applications requirements.
  • Monitor and act upon application logs that indicate potential system or security issues. 
  • Actively manage application users, this includes activation, creation and retirement tasks. 
  • Maintain application access control for external products (Jira/GitHub)
  • Manage the Research data load process in AWS Redshift.
  • Distribution of the monthly reports created by the Product Team analysts.
  • Manage the annual application penetration test and remediation tasks.   
  • Disaster recovery implementation in AWS (multiple zones) and regular testing to comply with business policies.
  • Ensure the systems used by the business have two factor authentication implemented where possible.
  • Implementation and monitoring of a Web Application Firewall to ensure systems are as secure as possible from intruder/actor penetration.
  • Maintain access control records for all data held within the business unit. 
  • Management and onboarding of new services.
  • Release management support.

Professional Skills & Experience:

  • At least 6+ years of experience in architecture, with a strong focus on enterprise platforms.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing  enterprise platforms and handling critical systems like payment processing, authentication, security, and subscription management.
  • Deep understanding of AWS platform, including deployment, management, and optimization of resources.
  • Expertise in DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, logging, and incident management, IaC
  • Proficiency in building and integrating secure authentication solutions, including OAuth, SAML, SSO, and MFA.
  • Degree level education, ideally in Information Technology but not essential.
